PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund announced its endorsement of State Representative Dr. Yadira Careveo in the race to represent Colorado’s recently drawn eighth congressional district. A pediatrician, Dr. Caraveo has served in the Colorado General Assembly since 2019, making pro-science policy issues the hallmark of her legislative work. CO-08 is a nearly forty-percent Hispanic district, and if elected, Dr. Caraveo would be the first Latina to represent Colorado in the U.S. House and the only physician in the Colorado delegation.

The race for CO-08, which has been deemed a “toss-up” by election analysts, is expected to be highly competitive. Had the district been drawn in time for the 2020 election, President Joe Biden would have carried the district by four percent.

“As vice chair of the Colorado House Health & Insurance Committee, Representative Dr. Yadira Caraveo has put her STEM training and background as a pediatrician to work for the people of Coloradans,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “From fighting for policies that ensure Coloradans have access to high-quality, affordable health care and paid family leave to passing legislation to make voting more accessible, Yadira has proven that she’s ready to lead the fight for evidence-based policies in the U.S. House.”

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of 314 Action. As a pediatrician, I’ve always tried to bring reason and science to the legislative process in the state house when it comes to issues like battling COVID. We need more of that in Congress, especially with so many anti-science, anti-vaccine, and anti-mask extremists in Colorado and in Washington,” said Dr. Yadira Caraveo, candidate for Congress in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District.

Last month, 314 Action launched a $10 million, cycle-long advocacy campaign focused on engaging voters on critical science issues — including climate change, health care, and the pandemic response — and holding anti-science public figures accountable. Additionally, 314 Action has engaged its six million grassroots member base to push for pro-science legislation at the federal level and across the states.

In 2022, 314 Action Fund will aim to spend $50 million to elect scientists across all levels of government, with initial targets of seven U.S. Senate races, forty U.S. House races, and twenty-one statewide races. In 2020, the organization spent $25 million on behalf of its endorsed candidates and raised a total of $5 million in grassroots donations for scientists running for office.

314 Action Fund is powered by a grassroots community of over six million people working to elect scientists, doctors, and STEM professionals who will use science and facts to address our most pressing issues like climate change and health care. In 2018 and 2020, we played a pivotal role in flipping the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, electing eleven Democratic scientists to federal office, as well as over 100 to state and local offices. In 2021 and 2022, 314 Action Fund will continue working to elect science leaders and defeat climate deniers in Congress and legislatures across the country.
