Melanie Stansbury started her career teaching ecology as an instructor in New Mexico before serving in the Obama administration on the Council on Environmental Quality and working in the Senate as a staffer on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
In 2018, during her first run for office, she defeated a GOP incumbent in a race Democrats didn’t even consider competitive, earning a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives.
After Joe Biden selected then-Rep. Deb Haaland to be his Interior Secretary, Melanie ran in the highly anticipated special election to keep her seat in Democratic hands. We were proud to be the first national organization to endorse Melanie in the primary and work alongside her to deliver a stunning special election victory where she outperformed President Joe Biden in a race that drew international attention.
