Science Professional and State Representative Running to Succeed Congresswoman Deb Haaland

March 3, 2021

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund endorsed Rep. Melanie Stansbury in the race to succeed Congresswoman Deb Haaland and represent New Mexico’s first congressional district.

From working as a science educator at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History to conducting research and working on science policy and environmental issues at the federal and state level, Melanie has spent her career advocating for a more just and sustainable future. A native New Mexican that worked in D.C. for a number of years, Melanie worked in the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Office of Management and Budget. Using her STEM background, Melanie has spent her career working to tackle complex systems issues such as climate and drought, hunger and food systems, and other critical issues facing our nation and New Mexico.

In 2018, Melanie was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives. Since taking office, she has passed fourteen pieces of legislation addressing a wide range of  issues, including the modernization of the New Mexico’s electrical grid, fostering resilience in the state’s food and water systems, and improving access to health care.

“I am proud to be endorsed by 314 Action Fund which helps elect STEM leaders to public office,” said State Rep. Melanie Stansbury, candidate for New Mexico’s first congressional district. “Science has always been the cornerstone of my work—especially on water, climate change, and community development. We need more people with STEM backgrounds to take on the urgent fight to address climate change,  environmental justice, and economic relief and recovery. I am ready to take on this fight serving in Congress.”

“Throughout her career, Melanie Stansbury has been an independent voice committed to promoting policymaking rooted in science,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Melanie will continue to fight for the people of New Mexico and serve as a champion of facts and evidence-based solutions, from combating the climate crisis to expanding access to affordable health care.”

314 Action Fund is powered by a grassroots community of over five million people working to elect scientists, doctors, and STEM professionals who will use science and facts to address our most pressing issues like climate change and health care. In 2018 and 2020, we played a pivotal role in flipping the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, electing eleven Democratic scientists to federal office, as well as over 100 to key legislative districts. In 2021 and 2022, 314 Action Fund will continue working to elect science leaders and defeat climate deniers in Congress and legislatures across the country.
