314 Action Slams Health Care Cuts to Pay for War in Trump Budget Proposal

April 3, 2026

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Donald Trump today announced his budget proposal, which features more sweeping cuts to health care and lifesaving medical research—including funding cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In response, 314 Action spokesperson Grace Silva released the following statement:

“Trump’s budget vows to make deeper cuts to health care to pay for a war he started—this is a tradeoff no American wants to make.”

“As this administration scrambles to find more money for bombs, more than one-third of Americans are scaling back on everyday expenses, including skipping meals to keep up with rising health care costs. Across the country, families are getting squeezed at the gas pump, the grocery store and the doctor’s office. With health care costs on the rise, now Trump wants to make deeper cuts to federal health programs, including more cuts to the NIH.

“This proposal continues to raid the Health and Human Services budget to pay for Trump’s illegal war. The proposal shrinks the HHS budget and includes a $5 billion reduction in funding for NIH, which comes after many researchers and career lost their jobs or had their research canceled. Last year, Trump’s sweeping NIH cuts were deeply unpopular and ultimately rejected—we urge Congress to ignore Trump’s proposal and preserve funding for NIH once again.”
