(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Dr. Jasmine Clark is the Democratic nominee and presumptive Congresswoman-elect for Georgia’s 13th Congressional District. She cleared the primary in a crowded field, and won outright to avoid a runoff with more than 50% of the vote. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Congratulations to our next Congresswoman for Georgia’s 13th Congressional District: Dr. Jasmine Clark. Dr. Clark’s decisive victory is historic—she will become the first woman PhD scientist and first Black woman PhD scientist in Congress.
“Dr. Clark’s win is a clear signal that voters trust scientists on the ballot. After flipping a Gwinnett County seat long held by a Republican incumbent, she became a leading Democratic voice in the legislature, standing up for science, exposing misinformation and blocking the most extreme legislation proposed by the Georgia GOP.
“This is the second win for 314 Action Fund endorsed candidates with a PhD in Congress—Dr. Clark is set to join PhD mathematician Daniel Biss in Washington, after he won a competitive Democratic primary earlier this year in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District. We’re proud to have supported Dr. Clark in 2018 and we look forward to working with her in Congress, where she’ll bring her legislative experience and her scientific background to Capitol Hill.”
Background:
314 Action Fund spent $300,000 on a TV and in-district streaming ad campaign in the Atlanta media market through the Dr. Jasmine Clark Science Victory Fund. The ad campaign was one of the largest external support packages for any candidate in the Georgia 13th Congressional District Democratic primary.
Dr. Jasmine Clark’s endorsement was historic for 314 Action Fund, marking the first time the organization endorsed a primary challenger to a Democratic House incumbent in the organization’s history.
