(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 7-2 in the Monsanto Company v. Durnell case, protecting pesticide manufacturers from legal liability under state laws. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“The U.S. Supreme Court just handed Big Chemical Corporations a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card.
“With this decision, thousands of cancer injury lawsuits across the country will be wiped away. Cancer survivors will no longer have the right to sue chemical manufacturers for the damage they have caused or recover any of the physical and financial costs of cancer they have endured. The decision to shield Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s corporate backers puts politics above patients.”
Glyphosate and pesticides have become a major issue for the MAHA movement in the midterms. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 78% of Americans—including 78% of Republicans and 77% of Independents—are concerned about the use of pesticides in food crops. The decision today is a major loss for MAHA activists, who protested outside the Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments.
Naughton continued, “RFK Jr. has turned his back on his biggest supporters and built his name on this. As a trial attorney, RFK Jr. personally won a multi-million dollar lawsuit against chemical manufacturers for cancer patients—now, he’s defending Big Ag. This decision is a major setback to an already splintered MAHA coalition. If corporations won’t pay for the damage they’ve caused, it’s almost certain that RFK Jr. will pay a steep political price for this.”
