(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Senate Republicans today failed to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s tax credits, allowing subsidies to lapse at the end of 2025. The ACA tax credits have broad, bipartisan support with 72% of Trump voters supporting their extension. Without them, Americans’ health insurance premiums are projected to more than double in the new year.
“With their vote, Republicans just priced hard-working Americans out of health care, dooming millions of Americans to a future without health insurance,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Republicans have no health care plan, except to continue a decades-long war against Obamacare. Between this vote and the passage of Trump’s trillion dollar cuts from Medicaid, Americans cannot afford to get sick under this administration.”
In a recent poll, KFF Health found that over half of enrollees would not be able to afford premium hikes without significantly disrupting their household finances. The same poll showed that 1 in 4 Americans would very likely be forced to go without insurance, if the subsidies were not extended.
Naughton continued, “Affordability and health care will be the top issues on the ballot in 2026. As Republicans continue to play politics with peoples’ lives, 314 Action will lead the charge to replace them. As we head into the midterms, 314 Action is working with a record number of doctors and scientists who understand how to fix this health care crisis. Their leadership and expertise are desperately needed in Congress and we’re going to work harder than ever to elect them to office.”
314 Action is the only national organization working to elect scientists across all levels of government—from the Senate down to local school boards. The organization is powered by a grassroots community of over six million people supporting scientists, doctors, and STEM professionals who will use science and facts to address our most pressing issues like climate change and health care.
