314 Action Statement on Republicans’ Mass Layoffs

October 10, 2025

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Donald Trump’s administration today announced the mass layoffs of federal employees in at least nine agencies—including the Department of Health and Human Services. 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“Today, Trump escalated his war on health care by firing thousands of federal employees, in addition to the over 32,000 HHS employees already furloughed. All year, he’s been gutting crucial research and funding from these institutions—and now he’s throwing oil on the fire.

“These employees have dedicated their lives to bettering our nation while keeping us safe and secure. Losing their work will only further erode trust in our government and in our health system. Trump should be working to protect them, but instead, he’s using them as a pawn to punish the Congressional members who are fighting back against his reign.

“We will not let voters forget that Republicans caused this shutdown, caused these layoffs, and caused this chaos because they refused to extend ACA subsidies. It’s time for them to lose their jobs. 314 Action is already working with over 50 scientists and doctors running for Congress, who will fight to protect federal employees, fight to save the Affordable Care Act, and fight to restore Medicaid.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today 314 Action Fund, the nation’s only organization dedicated to recruiting, training and electing doctors and scientists, endorsed Manny Rutinel to flip Colorado’s 8th Congressional District.

“As a first responder, attorney and environmental advocate, Manny Rutinel is the kind of leader Colorado deserves,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Since taking office, Congressman Gabe Evans has voted to gut Medicaid, take health care coverage away from millions, and make life harder for his district. Unlike Evans and his Republicans colleagues, Manny will put in the work to keep our government functioning and ensure all Coloradans have access to quality health care and clean air and land. We’re proud to endorse Manny in this crucial race and look forward to helping him flip the seat.”

“We need members of Congress that rely on facts and evidence to lower the cost of housing and health care, create good jobs, and build a stronger economy,” said Manny Rutinel. “I’m ready to fight for the people of Colorado and hold Congressman Evans accountable for bowing to Donald Trump and shutting down the government instead of lowering health care costs. I’m honored to have the endorsement of 314 Action and look forward to working with them throughout this campaign and in Congress to deliver real solutions for working families.”

Manny Rutinel has spent his career advocating to better the lives of Coloradans. With his degree in Microbiology and Economics, he became an Economist for the US Army Corps of Engineers, where I also served as a First Responder in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. After graduating law school, Manny became an environmental attorney, fighting to protect Colorado’s air, land, and water, before being elected to the State House.

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Last week, KFF Health released a new poll showing that over three quarters of Americans believe that Congress should extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies—including most Republicans and MAGA supporters. If Republicans let the subsidies expire, insurance premiums are set to nearly double.

“Poll after poll shows the vast majority of Americans, regardless of political party, want to see ACA subsidies extended. We’re already living in an affordability crisis and if Republicans in Congress fail to act, their health care costs will go through the roof,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action

KFF Health found that 70% of respondents would not be able to afford insurance premiums if they doubled—and over 40% said that they would be forced to go without insurance due to the spike in costs.

“Health care will be the deciding issue in 2026. 314 Action is working harder than ever to elect doctors and scientists who understand how Republicans’ health care cuts would devastate their patients and know how to fix the health care system from the inside out,” Naughton added.

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)  Following tragic news of the passing of renowned scientist and primatologist Jane Goodall, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“Jane Goodall was the best of us. She was a ground-breaking researcher, dedicated conservationist and one of the most globally renowned voices in the scientific community. Over the span of six decades, Jane charted a path for scientists to fundamentally rethink human evolution, environmental sustainability and animal welfare.

“I am deeply saddened by news of her passing. Just last week, I had the privilege to be in the same room with Jane at Climate Week as she continued her lifetime of advocacy. She was a giant in the environmental movement who inspired us all, and now more than ever we remain committed to advancing her legacy to protect our natural world, better understand ourselves and inspire future generations to continue her work. May she rest peacefully, as we carry on.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Republicans have officially shut down the government over health care. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“All year, Republicans have waged war on health care, slashing Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act by $1 trillion dollars, dismantling the CDC and eroding trust in vaccines. Now, they have shut down the government because they refuse to continue subsidies that make health care affordable on the ACA marketplace and threatened to gut health care even further. This is an all-out assault on health care in America and proof that Republicans can’t govern.

“Republicans control the House, Senate and White House — and instead of making it cheaper for millions of Americans to get health insurance, they chose to make it harder and more expensive. This is a reckless and wasteful Republican Health Care Shutdown and as a result, 75% of NIH employees and 64% of CDC employees will stop working and 32,500 HHS workers will be fired or furloughed.

“It is clear that health care will be the deciding issue in 2026. 314 Action is working to elect doctors and scientists who truly understand the impact of Republican health cuts on patients and how to fix America’s broken health care system. No American should die because they have to delay care or can’t afford life-saving medication. 314 Action calls on Republicans in Congress to end the shut down immediately and extend the ACA subsidies before it’s too late.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today 314 Action Fund, the nation’s only organization dedicated to recruiting, training and electing doctors and scientists announced the endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez for Wisconsin Governor. As a registered nurse and public health leader, Rodriguez is a Guardian of Public Health candidate. She’s answering the call to serve her state as 314 Action works to elect 100 new doctors, nurses and health care professionals to office by 2030.

Through Guardians of Public Health, 314 Action is working to elect 100 new doctors up and down the ballot and across the nation by 2030, raising and spending over $25 million in the effort.

“Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez is leading the fight to protect and expand Medicaid, ensuring all Wisconsinites have access to affordable health care, tackling workforce shortages, and investing in public schools and child care so every family has the opportunity to thrive,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “As Wisconsin’s next Governor, she’ll continue to stand up and fight for Wisconsinites, backing policy with science and data every step of the way. For the last seven years, Governor Tony Evers has championed pro-science policies — and now it’s time to pass the torch to Sara to continue this work. We’re proud to endorse her and look forward to supporting Sara’s campaign.”

“I’m honored to earn 314 Action Fund’s endorsement. As a nurse, I’ve seen what happens when patients can’t get the care they need — and when leaders attack science and medicine, they make those problems even worse,” said Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez. “Families shouldn’t have to go bankrupt just to afford prescriptions or child care, and they shouldn’t have to wonder if politicians will ignore basic facts about vaccines, climate, or public health. I’m running for governor to protect and expand Medicaid, lower costs, and defend science and evidence-based solutions — because Wisconsinites deserve leaders who will put facts and people first.”

Sara Rodriguez has spent her career on the frontlines of health care and public service. As an ER nurse, she worked night shifts during the height of the opioid and gun violence crises. At the CDC, she served in the Epidemic Intelligence Service, leading outbreak investigations around the world. In the Wisconsin Legislature, she flipped a red seat blue and fought to protect reproductive rights and public education. And as Wisconsin’s Lieutenant Governor, she’s traveled to all 72 counties in the state multiple times, working directly with families, farmers, and small businesses to tackle Wisconsin’s toughest challenges.

September 26, 2025

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — A new Quinnipiac University poll found that only one third (33%) of adults approve of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s role as the Health and Human Service Department Secretary. The longer he’s in office, the more unpopular RFK Jr. becomes—his approval has dropped to a new low.

Additionally, the poll found that 67% of Americans support school-based vaccine requirements.

“It’s unsurprising that the majority of Americans, regardless of political party, do not agree with what RFK Jr. is doing,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Everything he’s done since taking office—gutting medical research funding, blaming mothers for causing autism, making it harder to get vaccines, and his mishandling of the measles outbreak has only made our country sicker. The longer he is in office, the worse his approval rating gets. It’s past time for RFK Jr. to resign or be removed from office.”
