As a Senator, Robert F. Kennedy urged lawmakers to expand the Food Stamp program and today, RFK Jr. is destroying his father’s anti-poverty legacy. As funding for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) runs out on November 1st, RFK Jr. remains silent. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“Today, RFK Jr. is destroying his family’s legacy. In 1968, in his father’s first campaign speech as a presidential candidate, Robert F. Kennedy warned against the dangers of extreme hunger following a visit to starving children in Mississippi, “their bodies so crippled from hunger and their minds so destroyed…they will have no future.”

“Did the brain worm eat his empathy? Fast forward to 2025 and you’ll hear his son say SNAP is “poisoning” our children. RFK Jr. is not using his platform to advocate for the most basic necessity for children—access to food, and he is complicit in the administration’s decision to slash food assistance.

“As millions of families line up at food banks this weekend and the president continues to ignore federal court orders to distribute SNAP funding, we urge RFK Jr. to continue his family’s fight to feed America’s children, end this hunger crisis and reopen the government.”

October 31, 2025

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)  — Today, 314 Action held a virtual press conference ahead of open enrollment as millions of Americans prepare to face skyrocketing insurance premiums and SNAP funding runs out this weekend. 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton was joined by Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Rep. Kelly Morrison (MN-03), storytellers, and Democratic doctors and nurses running for office: Lt. Governor Sara Rodriguez (WI-GOV), Dr. Richard Pan (CA-03), and Dr. Tina Shah (NJ-07).

Excerpts from their remarks are below:

Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action
“It is chaos, it is corruption, it is cruelty, and it is shutdowns, and real people are feeling the effects. There is a real stark difference between what Democrats are fighting for and who they are fighting for, and what Republicans are doing while in control of Congress.”

Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, Representative of Illinois’ 14th Congressional District
“We need a Congress that cares about the people and that’s willing to stand up and say, cancel the cuts, lower the costs and save health care. Today marks Day 31 of the federal government shutdown, and still Republicans are refusing to come to the negotiating table.”

Congresswoman Dr. Kelly Morrison, Representative of Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District
“The Republican majority’s refusal to extend the vital ACA tax credits for working families is taking us backwards. It’ll just make more people uninsured. It’ll drive up prices when the cost of health care and everything else is already way too high.”

Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, candidate for Governor of Wisconsin
“This is what happens when politicians treat health care as a political football instead of a human right. I believe health care is a right, and I’ll fight to make sure every Wisconsinite, no matter their zip code, their age or their income, can see a doctor without worrying about how they’ll pay for it.”

Franciose Cham, ACA Recipient
“I don’t think health care is a luxury. It’s a necessity in life. I went to the hospital about two years ago because my blood pressure. I had donated blood and because of that, my blood pressure went down, and I had to go to the hospital because I was, like, 70 over, like, not breathing almost. I got the bill and it was $37,000. I was in the hospital for four hours.”

Dr. Richard Pan, candidate for California’s 3rd Congressional District
“Unfortunately, the time has run out. Time has run out. It is going to be November 1 tomorrow. People are getting their notices from their health plans, from the exchanges, saying that their premiums are going to increase, and not just by a little bit, but by a lot…Millions will drop their health insurance because they are unable to afford it. They will now be uninsured. They will delay their health care needs until it gets too so it gets really bad, and then they will show up in our emergency rooms and actually result in poor outcomes.”

Dr. Tina Shah, candidate for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District
“Just last month in the hospital, I saw a patient who was rationing his insulin because he couldn’t afford to pay for it, and he ended up in the ICU because of that, with a life threatening condition. I’ve seen my own mom denied essential care for her chest pain. That’s why I led a bipartisan campaign in New Jersey to pass legislation stopping insurance companies from denying life saving treatment. And right now, one of the clearest examples of how politics have failed New Jerseyans and we’ve been talking about this so far, is the fact that healthcare premium credits expire tomorrow when open enrollment begins, and congressional Republicans have no plan to change that.”

October 20, 2025

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, 314 Action Fund, the nation’s only organization working to recruit, train and elect doctors and scientists announced that Democratic doctors and scientists raised over $10 million last quarter. 314 Action Fund is currently working with 49 STEM candidates running in federal or statewide races in 2026 across 22 states. Together, they have collectively raised over $10 million in Q3.

Dr. Annie Andrews is a pediatrician and mom running for U.S. Senate in South Carolina and outraised 22-year incumbent U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham—recording her most successful fundraising quarter since launch with over $1.5 million raised. In Iowa, 314-endorsed engineer Christina Bohannan reported over $1 million raised, edging out Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in the most competitive House race in the country in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

As the Trump administration ramps up their attacks on science and keeps the government shutdown over health care, STEM candidates are picking up steam with a surge in contributions from grassroots donors.

“It’s clear that momentum is on our side heading into the 2026 cycle,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, 314 Action President. “At a time when Trump and Republicans are destroying health care in this country, from gutting Medicaid and refusing to make it cheaper for Americans to get health insurance, to dismantling the CDC, eroding trust in vaccines and mass firings of public health workers, voters are turning to Democratic doctors and scientists to get us out of this mess.”

2024 Pew Research study confirms that scientific and medical professionals have some of the highest approval ratings and levels of trust among voters. On the issue of health care—this trend is even more apparent. Recent polling shows 314 Action Fund endorsed candidates in the lead, even from traditionally red states like Ohio to Iowa. 314 Action candidates are the most trusted, especially when it comes to health care, and already frontrunners in key races across the country.

314 Action is the only national organization working to elect scientists across all levels of government—from the Senate down to local school boards.
